Rebuild the Kilung Shedra and Community Center

shedra fire-1 shedra fire3

On April 7, 2016 a devastating fire swept through the Kilung Shedra and Children’s School, destroying it completely. Gratefully, no one was harmed, but everything was lost.

Arising from the ashes of this tragedy, a modern new Shedra, Children’s School and community center is under construction to serve the people of Dzachuka for generations to come.

Your donation to rebuild the Shedra is greatly needed!
Please designate “Shedra Rebuild” on your donation.

Tremendous progress has been made —
help us keep up the momentum to complete and re-open the Shedra!

Our goal is to complete and reopen the Shedra complex in 2020!

The Shedra (Monastic College) will be home to the Kilung Children’s School, both essential to providing traditional Tibetan education to the community and to furthering Buddhist spiritual training. As rooms take shape in the new building, we imagine them soon filled with Tibetan children, monks and families whose lives and culture will be sustained by the new monastic college, children’s school and community center. You can help bring that vision to fruition with your donation.

Dedicate a Gau

A Gau is a traditional Tibetan prayer box dedicated in honor of an ancestor, family member or loved one. The name of the honored person will be placed inside the Gau on a wall in the beautiful new Kilung Shedra temple and teaching hall, receiving and generating blessings for all.

(Please indicate “Shedra Gau” on your donation and include the name of the person you are honoring.)

                                       $5,000 for each Gau:

or contact mullypemakilaya@gmail.com to pledge your gift over time.

After the fire, the sixty students initially resumed their studies in tents and temporary structures, but this proved too difficult and there is currently no school or shedra in session. The children and monks are scattered in different places, some at home, some in public school, and some at other Shedras such as Dzogchen, Shechen, Jangma, Palpung and Machen.

Demolition of the destroyed Shedra was completed, and groundbreaking for the new Shedra and Community Center was on June 17th, 2018. By the end of the 2019 building season, enormous progress had been made. Follow progress of the construction HERE.

The shedra will be a three-story, modern and environmentally sensitive building.

The new building, estimated to cost $1.7 million, will not only replace classrooms and dormitories essential for education, but it will also provide space for new activities and services including education for girls, visiting medical care, and community gatherings.

and Gonpo Tsering Community Center.

Thanks to an outpouring of generosity from donors around the world,
completion of the Shedra construction is within reach.

We need your help to complete the project so that
children and monks can resume their education!
